Crinoid tours the Arch7. Fossils tour the Menil 8. Crinoid and the Artist at Hobby Center 9. Drawing process All images are inket photographs, dimensions variable. Artists Mark Chen and Colleen Maynard found overlapping interest in deep geological time and evolutionary layers, particularly the Permian-Triassic extinction of 251 million years ago that wiped out nearly 90% of living species at the time. A giant spectrum of plants, fish, amphibians, proto-mammals, arthropods and insects died; among them, trilobites remains became some of the most abundant fossils found globally today. Many other species took such significant hits that they were dethroned from thousands of years in the making. Colleen’s vivid drawings honor the extinct creatures into realized complexity. The earth underfoot was a soft, blue-grey mound. Years and years of pine needles constantly decomposing makes for a soft soil. Rabbit droppings and furry moss create a slate tint. I’ve been fascinated with fossil records since these early days of exploring the woods, and a little further out from my backyard, the ancient glacial moraine history of the Great Lakes. The resulting drawings were exhibited at the Houston Public Library in&nbsp;Colleen Maynard: Calyxes and Polyps (Celebrating Coral of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary), March-May on paper36” x 24” Tabulate coral Graphite and charcoal on paper36” x 24” My home state rock, the honeycombed Petoskey stone (as it turns out a fossilized extinct rugose coral, Hexagonaria percarinata), littered the Great Lakes and my 2nd-grade rock collection. Later in college in Kansas City, Missouri, I bicycled a city of limestone ledges while studying painting and writing. And a bit later, I biked the flat sea of cornfields while studying botanical illustration at the Illinois Natural Survey—where, notably, an Entomologist kindly magnified a pretty bryozoan I brought in, confirming my fondness for fossils. Animal bones, shells, and rocks have become my keys to learning about other histories. Marine coral colonies, trilobites, and bryozoans are still some of my favorite things to draw, and sweeter still to stumble on outdoors. collaboration with the Galveston Art Center and the Department of Pathology at the University of Texas Medical Branch.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; My early research at the Truman G. Blocker, Jr. History of Medicine Collections tethered me to Johannis Remmelin’s anatomical ‘flap’ book, Catoptrum Microcosmicum (1667). This is a rare book of full-plate illustrations with layers of paper detailing muscular, skeletal systems, etc. so that lifting the layers shows the anatomy, as it would appear during dissection. Though cutting-edge at the time, I was amused by the hills of wildflowers models stood upon and literal paper fig leaves layered over genitals. I was also looking at Japanese anatomical watercolor paintings from the Edo period and the cross-section illustrations of late-pregnancy by obstetrician William Hunter and engraver Jan van Riemsdyk (Gravid Uterus, 1774).&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Expressing interest in cancer’s metastasis in bone and other organs, I received assistance from Dr. Paula Summerly and Mark Demming locating several specimen of malignant Melanoma metastasis in the UTMB Pathology Specimens collection. Each stemmed from a singular case of the foot, including infected clavicles, hands, femur, spleen, and testicles. Though I was immediately compelled to draw these organs, I also needed to learn more about this disease in order to handle the specimen with a high level of educated respect. I began illustrating a full-size torso that would house some of the affected organs and allow for break-off magnified views of affected bone, views of skin cancer in the epidermis and microscope views of Melanoma variations.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; While I drew, I strove for anatomical accuracy while realizing that I have a limited familiarity of anatomical organs, especially those affected by disease. My sources ran from the UTMB Pathology collection to Gunther von Hagens’ plastinized Body Worlds exhibit, from carved ivory anatomical “manikins” circa 1500-1700 to medical surgeries live-streaming online. As I learned more about Melanoma it became important to highlight histologic criteria for diagnosing melanoma from other skin carcinoma (basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas), and to show the visual variations that can be identified with a microscope between acral lentiginous melanoma, lentigo malgna melanoma, mucosal lentiginous, and superficial spreading types. Making a condensed drawing in a short period of time required a lot of editing, and as with most of my work, I often had to stop myself from going into obsessive detail on any one organ or system.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Having had the opportunity to research with medical experts and artists was the most stimulating part of the Visual Pathology Project. Dr. Tais Saito answered my questions about Melanoma and Histology (study of the skin), and Dr. Summerly, Dr. Afrouzian, and Dr. Walker provided further support and answers. Champaign-Urbana, or C-U, is a small agricultural college town dropped into a vast sea of corn and soy fields, and I found myself comparing it often to my small Michigan hometown and nearby MSU college campus. During this time I cycled past horses and cows on the way to my bakery job, watched “Twin Peaks” for the first time, and wrote extensively about nostalgia, utopia, and quaint places with troubled histories. I began drawing the stuffed animals and dolls I had taken with me on this move, a bit embarrassed I still had them. Turns out a lot of people I knew had a stuffed bear or hand sewn doll they had held onto into adulthood and were more than willing to provide for a sitting. These texture-rich portait sittings improved my technical drafting skills. Drawing them evoked something between honoring and exorcising the object, allowing their owners a permanent keepsake when cotton seams reach their last mend. <img width="900" height="1274" sitting at a kitchen bar, a can of something fizzy nearby. A marching band ricochets below, the brass and bass battering around the concrete like elephants in an earthquake. The last slip of golden-hour coats a mural of a young Stevie Wonder. It’s summer in the city but I swear the air has a lingering coastal scent of wet clay and kelp. Earlier in the day I walk Woodward and Michigan and Grand River, these wide historical avenues that may as well be familial. I think of the famous car shows that started three quarters of a century ago on Woodward Drive. I can imagine the old Cadillacs struttin’ slowly by Sunday afternoons. The tongue of Grand River Avenue extends all the way through my hometown to serve as the royal red carpet of our Jubilee and Memorial Day parades, the backdrop for our tractor pulls and our high school marching band. The river running through our backyards, which some dared to swim and fish in, trails through the university towns over. And so we were children to the university, a kinship from shared water, and we memorized its school anthem like church music, our eyes cast to the sky, “on the banks of the Red Cedar, there's a school that's known to all…” When I walk past the Detroit Tigers stadium I am overdressed, and when I walk through the gentrified financial district I am poor. It dawns on me that Detroit has some hills. Nothing wild, but enough to make for a sense of rolling adventure on foot. Must be the leftover glacial moraine from the Late Pleistocene, knob-and-kettle topography characterized by crests and dips. It’s weird not having an O’Reilly around to truly feel Of this city. Siblings who were our back-up best friends in the car. Aunts and uncles who took us to Eastern Market and the Motown Museum. Parents who drove us to concerts at Cobo, Pine Knob, The Majestic, or Saint Andrew’s Hall. Friends we wailed lyrics with on our descent out of town. Somehow I’ve never been alone in this city before. I want to stay in the moment of listening at this barstool, revel in the Tigers’ winning roar down the block. Yet as night descends I’m in the backseat of a car traveling east along I-94, always just outside the motor city, watching taillights swish over the hill ahead and beyond, the sky a vat of violet ink.
